Tomorrow by Kelley Tai

They were going to dim the sun. 

Stratospheric Aerosol Injections, they said, super safe, like ashes from a volcanic eruption.

Call it SAI, they said, like a friend. 

We watched planes turn the sky into a white checkerboard. My older brother cheered, so I did too. 

Before bed, our cavern shakes, strung-on lights wink in and out.

“I miss daddy,” Mika says. 

I kiss his forehead. “Daddy will be waiting for us on the beach with ice cream when all the snow melts. We’ll find him there.”  

Mika smiles in his sleep. 

I hope he dreams for both of us.
