Working 9 to ∞ by Sciascia DeKay

The rattle of typewriters echoed through the endless office space like torrential rain. Mike scratched his head. He still didn’t know exactly what his job entailed. On his first day he had been instructed to type.

“Type what?” he’d asked.

“Just type anything,” a monotone voice had said over the headset.

He’d stared at the typewriter, frowning at the foreign alphabet.

That had been two decades ago—or was it longer? Two eons? He pounded the keys.

A siren blared above his cubicle. Mike jumped in his seat.

“Congratulations to Mike,” a voice boomed through the speakers. “He wrote Hamlet.”
